Most of us who have been through school education can remember the teacher who made the biggest impact upon us, the teacher who inspired us and those who were fundamental to our learning and development. It should come as no surprise then, that the biggest influence on student outcomes is a teacher who knows the ins and outs of teaching. Whether you are a pre-service teacher planning to pursue the teaching profession or a novice teacher in the first year of teaching, this essential module will equip you with a basic understanding of teaching and learning.

To effectively choose teaching methods and help students learn, you must first know something about whom you are teaching. Your students will come from very different backgrounds and have various learning needs for which you will need to understand how learners develop and what affects their learning; this is where this module will play an important role.

To effectively choose teaching methods and help students learn, you must first know something about whom you are teaching. In module two, you learned about how the student develops, how the learning patterns of individuals differ from each other. In this module, you will learn how to plan. A teacher who fails to plan, plans to fail is indeed very true. To be an effective teacher, you need to be an organized one. This module will help you develop lesson planning skills in depth.

Effective teaching requires considerable skill in managing the myriad of tasks and situations that occur in the classroom each day. Skills such as effective classroom management are central to teaching and require “common sense,” consistency (an often undervalued teacher behavior), a sense of fairness, and courage. These skills also require that teachers understand in more than one way the psychological and developmental levels of their students.

A good way to think about ICT is to consider all uses of digital technology that exist to help individuals, businesses and organisations use information. ICT covers any product that will store, retrieve, manipulate, transmit or receive information electronically in a digital form. For example, personal computers, digital television, email, robots. So ICT is concerned with the storage, retrieval, manipulation, transmission or receipt of digital data. Importantly, it is also concerned with the way these different uses can work with each other.

What comes to your mind when you hear the word ‘assessment’? For most of us, what comes to our mind when we hear that word is ‘Oh no, not again’. It is something that evokes a negative feeling in all of us and we actually have to be out of our mind if we smile or lighten up at the thought of assessment. But have you ever wondered why do we feel this way about assessment? The problem is that people don’t really understand what is meant by assessment. They have also most probably had bad experiences with the word in the past that has influenced their perceptions.

You have gone through a lot of various aspects of education so far, one of the most important aspects is relationships between the teacher, student and parents. This is an oft neglected area but you will learn more about the teacher – student, parent – teacher, parent -child and even teacher – teacher relationship in this module.

A growing number of business leaders, politicians, and educators are united around the idea that students need “21st-century skills” to be successful today. It’s exciting to believe that we live in times that are so revolutionary that they demand new and different abilities, hence the teacher today also needs to be competent in these skills in order to transfer them to the student of today. To work, the 21st-century skills movement will require keen attention to curriculum, teacher quality, and assessment.

Innovative Pedagogy as a science and practice has a responsibility to prepare citizens of the knowledge society who are able to be creative, face changes, manage and analyze information, and work with knowledge. Worldwide schools and teachers are in various states of reform to adapt their instructional practices and educational systems to be more effective. The role of teachers has shifted from being a subject matter expert who transmits information to acting as a facilitator of student learning in the knowledge society. Current reforms emphasize teachers develop students’ capabilities in problem solving, teamwork, and learning to learn, reflective thinking.

Seamless integration is when students are not only using technology daily, but have access to a variety of tools that match the task at hand and provide them the opportunity to build a deeper understanding of content. But how we define technology integration can also depend on the kinds of technology available, how much access one has to technology, and who is using the technology. For instance, in a classroom with only an interactive whiteboard and one computer, learning is likely to remain teacher-centric, and integration will revolve around teacher needs, not necessarily student needs. Still, there are ways to implement even an interactive whiteboard to make it a tool for your students.
